Nothing is as it first appears.

I was delivering a seminar on business systems and how become a more effective ‘managing business owner’ by putting systems in place and getting your team to perform in their roles.

My client’s wife and asked him to come along. We agreed to meet the next week and have a chat about his business. He had his own building and maintenance company based in a lock up with a small office and a great office lady.

Apart from being an inspiring guy himself, he was really clear on what he wanted to do;

  • Grow the business – more work, more revenue, more people, more profit.
  • Spend less time in the business.
  • Spend more time with his young family.
  • Put systems in place.
  • Bring in a General Manager.

Let’s get cracking!

Meeting fortnightly, we set about things and together;

  • Assessed the 7 key areas of the business.
  • Created a business plan for the next 3 years.
  • Systemised the business.
  • Put in place a recruitment process.
  • Installed XERO.
  • Moved and expanded the office premises.

When you’re clear on what you want to achieve, great things can happen.

During the course of the next 18 months, we;

  • Systemised the business.
  • Grew the team to 20.
  • Moved and expanded the office premises.
  • Achieved a 200% increase in profitability.
  • Significantly reduced the owners days to day involvement in the business.

The unexpected result was that my client started to look beyond his business and found an opportunity to build a significant new building company in Queensland, Australia.

I worked with him to achieve a successful and profitable exit by sale from the business and helped the new owners transition in.

It also created the opportunity for me to work with new clients in Australia and generated a number of referrals within the building industry locally.
